In Arizona between 1300 and 2000 DUI Arrests are made every month. Every person who is convicted of a DUI must install an Ignition Interlock Device for a minimum of 1 year on any vehicle operated by that person and then comply with the MVD Program.
- A person who is convicted of a DUI must install an interlock within 30 days of the conviction
- They are then required to have that unit inspected every 30 days to determine if the participant is complying with the MVD Program, retrieving the log files and submitting them
- If 3 or more violations occur, the person may have an additional 1 year added to the interlock MVD program
From a technical standpoint here’s what you can expect:
An Ignition Interlock can be installed just like a car alarm; It’s a straight-forward process that has very little variations from vehicle to vehicle.
Installation times vary.
Every month the person must bring the vehicle & interlock for calibration and log collection
Once the person has installed the Interlock, MVD will issue them a new Ignition Interlock restricted driver’s license. MVD now requires that the person follow their system. That is to say that the participant must provide a clean breath sample to start the car and then take random rolling retest while driving. If the person complies with MVD and does not violate the system rules they can remove the interlock in 12 months. Violations add additional time to the interlock requirement.
What is a Violation?
A violation is any of the following. If the person attempts to start their car when they have a BAC greater than the legal presumption of a .08 three times in the year, that is a violation. If the person fails to take any random rolling retest, that is a violation. If the person tries to circumvent the operation of the machine (Jump start car), it is a violation. The person will receive an additional year for each violation. What does this mean to the person on the interlock? If they Blow alcohol into the system, or fail to take the test or starts the car without providing a clean test they get more time on the system. The Interlock does not know who is blowing into it. If some other person violates the system with their car they will get the extension.
What does this mean to you?
Individuals will come to your facility once a month for 12 months to have data retrieved from the system. If they need any work performed on their cars during the year they should have it performed by you to ensure that there are no unintended violations.
Also, this gives you an opportunity to generate leads for your business as an additional marketing outlet. Customers will be spending 30-60 minutes per visit in a waiting area. Our other locations have sold our clients oil changes, tires, engine repairs, body repairs, etc.
What do you need to get started?
You will need to provide a shop with 1 or more technicians who are capable of installing equipment to the equivalent of a car stereo and alarm installation. Technicians cannot have a DUI conviction in the last 7 years to qualify as an IID (Ignition Interlock Device) Technician.
